Saddle Hills County re-opens Spring Lake Campground

Aug 30, 2019 | 3:07 PM

After having to close down earlier this year, the Spring Lake Campground has been taken over by Saddle Hills County and is now open in time for the Labour Day weekend.

The park was closed following the May long weekend by the previous owners, which was announced on Facebook at that time.

However, it didn’t take long for Saddle Hills to be approached about the possibility of them taking over the lease.

“Saddle Hills County was approached by Alberta Public Lands and Alberta Environment and Parks about taking over the lease from the former leaseholder,” said Recreation Coordinator with Saddle Hills County Michelle Horncastle. “From there, Council directed staff to take over the lease, so that the campground would be available for use for the public who enjoy it.”

The acquisition of that lease also includes the boat launch and the day use area.

With that, the campground was re-opened earlier this week just in time for the final long weekend of the summer season.

The sites are available on a first come, first serve basis, as there is no reservation system in place for this season. That means those considering heading out that way may not want to wait too long, as Horncastle says they are expecting a full house for this weekend.

“We’ve kind of been told to expect it to be full,” said Horncastle. “We’ve got caretakers on site, and over the last few days they’ve seen quite a few people coming out to the space.”

“It sounds like everybody is pretty excited to go out there for the long weekend.”

Site rates are the same as 2018, which are set at $27 per night. That nightly rate includes firewood, a fire pit and a picnic table at your site. There are 40 sites total at the campground.

The campground will be open until October 1 this year.

The campground is located about 28 km north of the Village of Hythe and about 85 km northwest of Grande Prairie. It’s location can be seen on the map below:
