No change to Beaverlodge speed limits, yet

Sep 10, 2019 | 2:46 PM

Beaverlodge Town Council hasn’t made a final decision on changing the speed limits within town limits just yet.

Council made a motion at Monday night’s meeting to have the Protective Services Committee explore alternate options to having a blanket 30 km/h speed limit on all streets in town. **That would exclude the stretch of Highway 43 that goes through town, as the town has confirmed that any decision made would not effect the speed along the highway.

A recent survey held by the town showed 71% (596) of respondents were not in favour of seeing such a change, with 242 voting in favour.

However, during Council’s deliberations, according to a release, Councillor Cal Mosher said from what he’s heard from town residents is there are more people in favour of the change than against. Council also referenced the fact that this began as a safety issue and that needs to remain the primary focus.

More enforcement and extending school zones were all brought up as different possible solutions.

Mayor Gary Rycroft says there are more options than having just one lowered speed limit throughout the entirety of Beaverlodge.

No date for when the committee is to submit its report back to council was noted on the release.

**Correction (Sept. 11, 4:35 p.m.): The Town of Beaverlodge says that any decision made about speed limit changes would not effect the speed along Highway 43 through town. We apologize for the confusion
