2019 FEDERAL ELECTION

2019 federal election officially underway

Sep 11, 2019 | 8:46 AM

The 40-day federal election campaign has officially begun.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has asked the governor general to dissolve Parliament.

Polls suggest the Liberals and Conservatives are jockeying for first place in the popular vote, while the NDP and the Green party are fighting for third place.

As Parliament ends, the Liberals hold 177 seats, the Conservatives, 95, the Bloc Quebecois 10 and the Greens two.

Trudeau’s plan calls for him to fly immediately to British Columbia for a rally in the NDP-held riding of Vancouver-Kingsway.

Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer is bound for Trois-Rivieres, Que., and then an evening rally in a Toronto suburb.

The NDP’s Jagmeet Singh is beginning his day in London, Ont., and the Greens’ Elizabeth May is in Victoria.

There are eight independents with five seats vacant.

Voting day will be October 21st.
