DeBolt based tech company looking to continue growth

Sep 12, 2019 | 5:30 AM

A tech company with its head office in DeBolt is hoping a loan guarantee from Western Economic Diversification will help it expand and to hire more employees.

Sonar Software works with internet service providers to bring all their management methods into one place. That can include things like billing and troubleshooting. It also works with oil and gas companies that want to monitor equipment in the field and companies that have multiple-unit apartment or office buildings.

Chief Operating Officer Glenn Moore says his company is adding to its workforce every month and this loan will allow Sonar to hire people faster.

“Over the next 12 to 24 months, we expect that we’re going to hire another 50 to 100 people to expand the business that we have already got going.”

Sonar currently has 30 employees scattered across North America, plus contract workers in places around Europe.

It is looking to hire in areas like support, training, marketing, and sales.

Moore adds he would hire all people from the Peace if there were enough that were qualified.

“It’s challenging to find people that are skilled in the areas that we need them of programming and coding and development, but we’re training people. We’re bringing in people that are not skilled yet.”

Moore says if Sonar can help generate more tech jobs and training in Alberta that will help diversify the economy, it will be “win-win” for everybody.

He adds Sonar’s success proves tech. companies don’t have to be based someplace like Silicon Valley to be successful.

“In fact, that’s the difference . We have had a number of really, highly qualified, highly skilled people come to work for Sonar and the reason they come to work for Sonar is because they don’t want to be in the tech. centres. They don’t want to be in the cities. They want to have the opportunity to live wherever it is they want to live and have that lifestyle, but still be involved in cutting-edge technology.”

Moore says his company was recently chosen by Microsoft as a partner to provide software for its efforts to bring internet to where there is none, or where what is there is of poor quality. He describes this as “a big win” for them.

Moore says two founding members of Sonar are from DeBolt and that the head office is located in an old school. They also have people based in Vancouver, Toronto, Texas, and Wisconsin. He says his company has what he describes as “a very unique workforce” as they will be in contact all day for work, then be gaming together online in the evening.
