GRANDE PRAIRIE CITY COUNCIL

City of Grande Prairie approves 2020 community group funding grants

Sep 15, 2019 | 9:32 AM

The City of Grande Prairie approved the 2020 community group funding grant allocation at the most recent Council Committee of the Whole.

In the past, community groups and organizations would present to council for cash funding.

This year, city administration worked with community groups on funding applications for 2019/2020.

Mayor Bill Given says the decrease in requests for cash funding have changed their approach.

“I think the strategy now is to have a much more professionalized approach, that is more logical and analytical and that also looks at the overall city support for the organization, including those things that maybe we weren’t counting before.”

The city will be putting in over seven million dollars in funding for community groups on a two-year budget cycle.

In July, city council voted in favour of keeping the funding allocations for 2020 at the same levels as 2019.

Mayor Given says these funds help larger and smaller groups and organizations in the community as well.

“Obviously the library and the art gallery are very important organizations and facilities in our community, and so if you look at the report you’ll see that they receive really the lion’s share of funding and support, but we also have a number of other community organizations that use facilities that are owned and maintained by the city, including the curling club, and the Centre for Creative Arts.”

Funding is based on approved budget resources. Administration makes recommendations based on the community need and if the community groups or organizations can meet that need.
