Canadian Cancer Society CIBC Run for the Cure to go October 6 in Grande Prairie

Sep 29, 2019 | 7:00 AM

The 28th annual Canadian Cancer Society CIBC Run for the Cure goes next Sunday, October 6 in Grande Prairie.

A nation-wide event that is held in many communities across Canada, donations are fundraised through participants, as well as donations being accepted by those not participating in the run.

Janice Lovejoy, volunteer run director for the event, explains what will be happening prior to the run.

“If people want to come and we will have some games and there will be some door prizes for people, and we’ll have a DJ and a photobooth, so you can come and spend a little bit of time there and not just do the run.”

The run starts at 10 a.m. and sign up for the run and for volunteering can be found here.

The Canadian Cancer Society says that 1 in 8 women are expected to develop breast cancer in their lifetime, and that on average, over 70 Canadians are diagnosed with breast cancer each day. Women and men can both be at risk for breast cancer.

Lovejoy says that the event and the money raised can go along way.

“I can’t imagine what it would be like to be told that you have breast cancer and not know if it can be cured, if you have metastatic breast cancer [that] you can live for decades with that, and every little bit of research that goes into this makes it that much better for everybody involved.”

She adds that since 1987, the statistics for living longer with breast cancer have gone up 87%.

Last year, more than 80,000 participants raised $16.2 million across Canada. Since 1992, the run has raised more than $445 million.
