Candidates stepping up for federal vote

Nominations closed Monday for the October 21 federal election.

Elections Canada says there are five confirmed candidates in Grande Prairie-Mackenzie.

Incumbent Conservative Chris Warkentin is being challenged by New Democrat Erin Alyward, Douglas Burchill with the People’s Party of Canada, Liberal Kenneth Munro, and Shelly Termuende with the Green Party.

Warkentin has been a Member of Parliament since first being elected in 2006.

There are also five confirmed candidates in Peace River-Westlock. Incumbent Conservative Arnold Viersen will be up against Peter Nygaard of the Green Party, Leslie Penny for the Liberals, John Schrader with the People’s Party of Canada, and New Democrat Jennifer Villebrun. Viersen is seeking his second term as an MP.

The list of nominees becomes official Wednesday.
