New group organizing Dunes cleanup this year

Oct 1, 2019 | 3:10 PM

The Wapiti Off-Road Association will be hosting the annual Dunes Clean-up Saturday.

Association President Cory McInnis says his group wants to make sure the area is looked after, and not just for off-roaders to use.

“For the last couple years, (it has been cancelled.) It hasn’t made a lot of sense to us. So, we just want to make sure that we go forward and take over it and steward that land and make sure that the clean-up takes place.”

McInnis adds they will be doing a general clean-up of the area and removing abandoned vehicles.

“There are a lot of burned vehicles that come out of there. The biggest part of it is the burned vehicles that sit there and lay stagnant. It does seem like people will drive right past the Aquatera dump and just keep driving right in, in the winter or summer, and feel the need to dump their garbage.”

McInnis says while there are a lot of people who dump garbage and abandon vehicles in the area, there are a lot of good people who protect it.

“I’ve even heard of a guy blocking somebody and not leaving, at his own risk, until the RCMP showed up to fine a person for doing illegal dumping, so it’s changing a lot out there. It’s not acceptable to do illegal dumping and we think that we’re changing the mentality of people doing illegal dumping in those areas.”

Anyone interested in helping on Saturday can meet at the staging area east of the Dunes golf course. It is located east of Resources Road, across the railway tracks. The clean-up will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. You can also check the Wapiti Off-Road Association Facebook page.
