2019 Vital Signs report coming out Tuesday

Oct 7, 2019 | 2:19 PM

The results contained in the 5th Vital Signs survey will be released Tuesday morning at Centre 2000.

The biennial check on Grande Prairie and the surrounding area is conducted by the Community Foundation of Northwestern Alberta.

Past reports have looked at a wide range of things, from health and recreation to the economy and population demographics.

CEO Tracey Vavrek says current data plus results of a community survey will be unveiled.

“We started Vital Signs in 2011. When we started reporting to our community on our community strengths and weaknesses, we started with the base and we started with no background behind us.”

She adds it is helpful to have previous reports to look at.

“Now we’re able to look at our past history and have a clear understanding of strengths and things that have been happening and also some of our challenges (and) to see some of the trends in our community.”

Vavrek says one new thing that will be included this year is what are called sustainable development goals.

“We know we have immense work that’s being done at our local level. It’s community projects and programs that are combatting poverty, they’re combatting environmental challenges. We have projects and programs that are focused to ensure education and equality is important.”

Vavrek says once the report is public they will be able to “celebrate some areas but have some discussion around the tough topics as well.”
