Affordable Housing Strategy and other council highlights

Oct 7, 2019 | 6:30 PM

Grande Prairie City council met on Monday.

Open delegations

Jeremy Walker, President of UDI Grande Prairie and Scott Pravitz, President of the Canadian Home Builder’s Association Grande Prairie, both presented to council against the proposed affordable housing solutions, including the proposed municipally-run housing corporation.

Two other members of the community also presented in relation to the Affordable Housing Strategy 2020-2030.

Affordable Housing

Discussions of the proposed Affordable Housing Strategy 2020 2030 were sent to a future Council Committee of the Whole meeting.

The Community Housing Company Business plan was received by council for information.

Last week, the strategy and business plan were pushed through to council at the Infrastructure and Protective Services Committee.

Currently, there is no scheduled date for the next Council Committee of the Whole meeting.

Grande Prairie Airport Business Operating and Parking Bylaw – Bylaw C-1392

City council approved the Grande Prairie Airport Business Operating and Parking Bylaw.

Shallow Gas Tax Relief Initiative

Council voted to approve the Shallow Gas Tax Relief Initiative, a property tax relief for shallow gas wells and pipelines, where the tax is reduced by 35% for the 2019 tax year.

The changes mean the Airport Commission, rather than the City Manager, will oversee fees and charges.

The city says this will mean a more efficient process.

Land Acknowledgement Policy

Council voted to approve moving forward with a project to develop and put a Land Acknowledgement Policy in place.

Council also approved the first steps in the project, which include hiring a consultant who is knowledgeable in Indigenous land teachings to assist in developing the policy and to lead a medicine walk for Council and senior administration.

The City of Grande Prairie is on traditional Treaty 8 territory.
