2 million voters cast a ballot in first two days of advanced polls

More and more Canadians are taking advantage of early voting opportunities.

This past weekend, across the country more people voted in the first two days of advanced polls than four years ago.

According to the preliminary figures, approximately two million electors voted in the first two days (October 11-12) of advanced voting. This is a 25 per cent during the same period in 2015 when approximately 1.6 million electors cast their ballot.

The preliminary figures also say in total, a near five million electors voted at the advance polls in this general election, which is a 29 per cent increase from the 3,657,415 electors who voted in advance in the 2015 general election.

Leanne Nyirfa with Elections Canada says that these figures do not include electors who voted in local offices, on campus, in additional service points, or by special ballot.

Thousands of polling stations were open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. over the Thanksgiving long weekend throughout Canada. This is the first time advance polls were open for twelve hours each day.

The numbers are not available per electoral district at this time, but just recently during the provincial election, Grande Prairie had the highest number of advance voting turnout in all of the province.

Today is the last day to vote by special ballot at any Elections Canada office in Canada. You have until 6 pm to do so. After that, you will need to wait until election day (October 21.)
