Storm take over Coca Cola Centre to close out home stand

Oct 18, 2019 | 12:57 PM

With the GP Fall Woman’s Show taking over Revolution Place this weekend, the Storm have made other arrangements for this weekend’s games to close out their four-game home stand.

The Storm will invade the Coca Cola Centre tonight as they take on the Okotoks Oilers, and again on Saturday when they entertain the Canmore Eagles.

Storm Business Manager Eric Hein says the team is excited to play in a more intimate venue, because it’ll help emphasize the crowd noise.

“We have the best fans in the AJHL, and we believe that it’s going to be loud in there. It’s going to be tough to play. Okotoks is going to have a hard time playing tonight.”

“I think it’ll be loud; I think it will be a difficult building.”

Tonight’s game is the third and final meeting between the Storm and Oilers this season, in which the first two matchups have gone heavily in favour of the Oilers. The Storm have been outscored 10-1 in the two meetings with Okotoks, while being outshot 75-28.

With that said, Hein feels that the club will get a big boost and support from having a more concentrated crowd in the approximate 1,500-seat venue.

“We have a young team, and they really feed off of the energy of the crowd,” said Hein. “I think that Coke Centre presents a great opportunity for us to really engage our team, engage our fans and have a great atmosphere tonight.”

Seating is not assigned and on a first come, first serve basis. Hein also adds that since the seats are metal, bringing blankets or cushions to sit on are a good idea.

“Or everyone stand and cheer and make some noise. Get off your feet and bring it.”

The game will also feature two of the Storm’s newest signings making their debuts, as the team has added 17-year-olds Carter Myrol and Brett Meerman from Midget.

Myrol is a 6’0” tall forward who joins the team from the Northern Alberta Xtreme in Edmonton. He scored 12 goals and added 16 assists, helping his team to a CSSHL championship lats year.

Meerman, a native of Blackfalds, comes from the Red Deer Chiefs and scored 15 goals and added 30 helpers last season.

Puck drop for both tonight’s game and Saturday’s is at 7:30.
