RCMP reminding residents of ways to keep safe this Halloween

RCMP are reminding parents and guardians of ways to keep everyone safe during Halloween.

Constable Candace Hrdlicka with the Grande Prairie RCMP says it is important to keep the roads safe for the trick-or-treaters.

“Of course, this time of year in Grande Prairie it’s often dark at night when kids are out trick-or-treating, so our top concern is making sure that trick-or-treaters are wearing light-coloured costumes or lights on their costumes so that they’re easily seen by motorists, and also asking that motorists slow down their speed, especially in the residential neighbourhoods.”

She adds that it is a good idea to inspect all candy and treats that are received.

“Though it is very rare for anything to be found, it can and has happened, so we strongly encourage everybody to hold off on eating those treats until they get home, and for parents and adults to make sure that they’re inspecting their children’s candy before anybody consumes it.”

The RCMP are also reminding trick-or-treaters to be traveling either with adult supervision, in groups or with a cellphone.

Hrdlicka also says there are things the community can do to ensure a safe evening.

“Of course when kids are coming to our doors, it doesn’t hurt to just have a peek outside, make sure that they’re with an adult, listening for anybody that may be having concerns or problems along the way, and if need be of course, contacting the police if there is an issue or concern.”
