GPRC Student’s Association looking to begin relationship with city council

Nov 9, 2019 | 7:00 AM

The Grande Prairie Regional College Student’s Association is hoping to begin a relationship with the city.

At Monday’s City Council meeting this past week, representatives from the Student’s Association outlined the results of their student survey that involved things such as student involvement in city matters.

Lindsey Comeau, President of the Students Association, says that many of the topics in the survey dealt with student specific issues.

“Lots had to do with affordability, which is kind of an ongoing issue in any city, but the transit has ongoing concerns for students where they want more accessibility and things of that nature. And affordable housing is always a huge thing for students in any city, and yeah, things of that nature.”

The survey covered the topics of public transit, affordable housing, city inclusiveness and the college park re-design.

61.8% of students that participated in the survey said they felt they are not included in the city’s decision-making processes.

Only 18.2% of the students surveyed agreed that the current transit system is effective.

The student’s association says that while the student survey was smaller and the results do not reflect the entirety of those enrolled at the GPRC, the priorities outlined are in line with what they hear on a day-to-day basis.
