Icy Highways

Multiple area highways closed due to collisions

Nov 15, 2019 | 8:43 AM

UPDATE (10:46 a.m. Friday): 511 Alberta reports that Highway 40 between Grande Prairie and the Cutbank River is now opened as crews have cleared the road of multiple collisions this morning.

Grande Prairie RCMP also say that Highway 43 at Smoky HIll is fully reopened to traffic, after significant traffic backups because of the icy roads and tractor trailers being unable to climb the hill.

They advise to continue to use caution on area roadways and give yourself extra time in your travels, as roads continue to be icy in the area.

Multiple area highways have been closed this morning due to motor vehicle collisions and bad road conditions caused by the freezing rain.

Grande Prairie RCMP say both the east and westbound lanes of Highway 43 at the Smoky Hill are currently backed up, as many semi trucks can’t make it up the hill due to the icy conditions. They ask drivers to avoid the area while crews work to clear the roadway. They add no injuries have been reported there.

511 Alberta reports that Highway 43 and 43x from Grande Prairie to Wembley has been closed due to multiple collisions.

It also says Highway 40 from Grande Prairie to the Cutbank River is closed, also because of multiple collisions.

Add Highway 59 to that list, as a collision has closed the highway about four kilometres east of La Glace.

RCMP are asking drivers to slow down and take their time, and avoid all travel in the area unless it is necessary.
