Tanker truck fire closes Highway 49 east of Dawson Creek

Nov 16, 2019 | 5:18 PM

DriveBC says Highway 49 remains closed in both directions at the Pouce Coupe bridge, following a tanker truck fire Saturday morning that also led to an oil spill into the Pouce Coupe River below.

The B.C. Spill Response reports that a tanker truck hauling crude oil was involved in an accident while crossing the Pouce Coupe bridge, which led to the truck fire.

The report further states that the Dawson Creek Fire Department, RCMP and an Environmental Emergency Response Officer (EERO) responded to the scene. The driver was taken to hospital with undisclosed injuries.

The B.C. Ministry of Environment & Climate Change Strategy is currently working to clean up the oil, which spilled onto both the bridge and into the river below.

The Ministry also says that the bridge is closed until further notice, as an engineer will need to assess the damage to the bridge and certify the bridge is safe before it can re-opened.

Crews are asking that motorists detour using 207 Rd. and Briar Ridge to get to Highway 2, if you are coming from the Alberta border.
