Grande Prairie Pirates give $15,000 to legacy fund

Nov 26, 2019 | 4:30 AM

The Grande Prairie Pirates fastball team recently made a $15,000 contribution to a legacy fund it has at the Community Foundation of Northwestern Alberta.

The money came from the profit made by hosting Men’s and Master Men’s Nationals earlier this year.

Player Shayne Milligan says the club saw this as a chance to support the community.

“The community has supported us throughout the years and we wanted to find something that would have a positive impact and something that would keep giving for, well basically, forever.”

He is hoping the team can keep contributing to the fund in future years.

“We have a bank account through the Community Foundation. It’s the interest that is donated every year to local charities. We hope that we build this account big enough that every year, we get to chose which charity that we want to allocate the monies to. There will always be a list I’m sure.”

Milligan says the money could go something different every year. That could include things like a community group, school playground work, or a scholarship.
