Beaverlodge fire fighters to collect for food bank on Monday

Nov 30, 2019 | 7:00 AM

Firefighters in Beaverlodge are holding their annual food drive in support of the Beaverlodge Christmas Hamper and Food Bank.

The Beaverlodge Fire Department has partnered with the Beaverlodge Alliance Church Youth Group and the 4H Club to collect donations.

Fire Chief Stan Metcalfe says, starting at 6 p.m. on Monday, December 2, they will be going door to door, with lights, sirens and loudspeakers on, requesting donations from residents.

“It’s an annual thing we do. We get a significant amount of donations for the food bank, which all stays here in our local community. So if you do see a knock at your door or
see lights come up to your driveway, there’s not an emergency typically, there may be of course, but that’s what we’re out there to do. So if anybody wants to make a donation, that would be a great time to do it.”

They will be collecting toiletries, gift cards, and non-perishable foods, including canned fruits, vegetables, soups and meats; pasta; crackers; pudding and fruit cups; and other dry or canned good.

Metcalfe says the annual tradition of collecting for the Beaverlodge Food Bank is important to the members of the fire department.

“Our service is obviously grounded in being able to give back to the community, and this is just another way that we can do that. We typically think, as an emergency service, somebody phones 911 and they need help, but there’s lots of times where somebody needs help and they just don’t know what the outlet is, or they struggle to make ends meet, and that too is an emergency. So it’s just one more way that we can assist the public. So it means a lot to us to be able to do that every single year.”

The fire trucks will be going door to door across town on Monday, but anyone who misses them can still donate. Goods will be collected at the Beaverlodge Town Office, Beaverlodge Pool, the Co-Op, the IGA, Red Apple, Rexall Drugs and Ace Hardware.

Donations will also be accepted at the Fire Hall on Friday during the Christmas Craze event, which Metcalfe describes as an all-night shopping extravaganza.

“All of Main Street opens up and stays open late. Santa Claus comes to the fire hall, and there’s Christmas carols, and we light the Christmas tree, it’s good times.”

Monetary donations can also be dropped off at Beaverlodge Town Office for a donation receipt.
