St Mary’s School wants an outdoor ice rink on the south field

St Mary’s School in Sexsmith is appealing to the town for help establishing an outdoor skating rink on the school property.

An outdoor skating rink has never been built at this site, and Chief Administration Officer for the town of Sexsmith Racheal Wueschner, says the location would benefit a lot of people.

“There is currently not a skating rink on that south end of town that’s easily accessible to the school and the residents of that area. So the town is looking at ways to maybe assist in getting them a rink out there.”

Principal Mandy Jensen says they have witten a letter to the town, as they need to create a partnership in order to build the rink.

“So basically we will provide the structure and the frame for the ice rink. And we’re hoping that they will help us with the flooding of it in the initial stages, and then the maintenance of the flooding. Then we’ll take care of clearing the snow and making sure it’s good for the kids to use.”

The school doesn’t have a way to flood the site, and would need the town to truck in and pump the water into the rink.

The school will also be in charge of safety during school hours, and safety signs will be posted for the general public.

The proposed location is on the south field of the school. Jensen says they had initially thought of putting it in the basketball court, but they didn’t want to cause any issues with the asphalt, so a space on the field would be created if they get approved.

The proposal still needs approval from Town Council before building the rink can begin, but Jensen says she’s optimistic the motion will pass so they can begin setting up the rink as soon as possible.
