Banff Centre Mountain Film Festival returns to Grande Prairie

Jan 6, 2020 | 2:48 PM

For the 22nd year, the Banff Centre Mountain Film Festival World Tour is returning to Grande Prairie from January 11-13.

The festival is one of the most prestigious mountain festivals in the world, as it brings together over 400 films from across the globe.

The festival was started over 30 years ago in Banff and helps showcases mountain living and culture, mountain sports activities and adventure.

As the festival has gained popularity over the years, it has been put on tour for different communities throughout Canada and spread out across the world.

“People can expect to see anything to do with the mountains. Mountain adventures, things like community, lifestyle, people, the culture of people who live in the mountains throughout the world. We try and bring films that represent mountain culture, as well as mountain, activates,” said Geo Rawlins, a co-host for the festival.

Different levels of film creators are represented at the festival, from small independent people who make their own films, to company’s like the BBC or Discovery channel.

In the past, the festival has experienced good attendance throughout the three days. This year the festival is sold out on both Saturday and Sunday, while some tickets remain available for Monday.

“We’re very fortunate to have strong support throughout Grande Prairie over the past 22 years. This year we were very fortunate to sell out the Saturday, and Sunday night. We have close to 150 tickets left for the Monday night that remain. We are very excited about that,” said Rawlins.

Rawlins tells us that he hopes that the festival can inspire filmmakers.

“A hope of bringing the Tour to Grande Prairie is to try and get that Canadian content. We want to encourage and motivate locals to go out, create content and submit it to the Banff Centre and see what happens.”
