"blatant disregard for public safety"

Energy industry lobby warns landowners not to get involved with oil and gas wells on property

An energy industry lobby is warning landowners not to interfere with oil and gas wells on their property no matter how frustrated they may be over lease payments owed to them.

A landowners group in southern Alberta is advising farmers and ranchers to shut off power and close valves on well sites if energy companies have cut or failed to make payments.

Brad Herald of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers calls that a blatant disregard for public safety.

He says wells have specific shutdown procedures and not following them could put landowners and the public at risk.

The landowners are upset because more and more companies are telling them that they won’t be making payments they are legally obliged to make.

Herald says no business owner would make that decision lightly.

He says it’s an index of how lingering low oil prices have affected the industry.

Landowners say companies should have planned for tough times.
