South Peace Regional Archives looking for a larger space

Feb 6, 2020 | 12:35 PM

The South Peace Regional Archives (SPRA) is looking for more land to house its large collection.

The SPRA went before a city committee on Tuesday to discuss the desired land.

The archives are currently stored inside the Grande Prairie Museum, says SPRA President Jan Shields.

Shields says she was pleased with the committee’s response.

“I believe that they value the Archives. I’m hoping they’ll see that, and (that) one of their goals for the area down there is cultural, and that what we do is we strengthen that feeling of culture from the heritage standpoint.”

The committee directed Administration to review the request.

Shields adds that they did look for other leasing opportunities, but there are certain standards when dealing with old documents and photos.

“It has to be very, very specifically done, and if you’ve got any old pictures in your basement, you know exactly what happens to them and the written documents you’ve got, they curl up and turn yellow and die.”

She says things like climate control and floor weight are important and make it harder to move into an existing building.

The building is planned to be 10,000 square feet and will be located across the parking lot from the pavilion. Shields adds that there are heritage trees in the location, but that they will not disturb them.

If the land is approved, the SPRA will begin requesting grants from the Federal and Provincial governments.
