Community Foundation of Northwestern Alberta CEO retiring

Feb 7, 2020 | 5:30 AM

Longtime Community Foundation of Northwestern Alberta CEO Tracey Vavrek is retiring after 19 years on the job.

The announcement came Thursday afternoon following a letter from Vavrek, expressing her thanks and gratitude to everyone she’s worked with over the last 19 years.

Vavrek says in the letter that her focus over the last 19 years was to work closely with community leaders who dedicated their time and skill as board directors and committee members, to focus on inspiring action with a vision of a strong and connected region, develop partnerships with various stakeholders who came together for a common cause and expanded their reach to all corners of Northwestern Alberta in a positive way.

EverythingGP caught up with Vavrek after the announcement and spoke to her about what she’s enjoyed over the last two decades.

“I have been blessed with an amazing journey of working with so many key individuals, friends, donors and board of directors. I look where the foundation is today and it’s in a beautiful spot. I look at this as a great opportunity for someone to come in with new ideas, thoughts, and leadership to help take the organization to the next level.”

When asked about what she’ll miss, Vavrek said it’s the people.

“I really cherish the people, because the people are the ones that make what we are and help us do what we do. Without all the partnerships and relationships that are in the community from people that care, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do. I’m very proud and humbled.”

While Vavrek is stepping away from the Foundation, she will be moving on to something new. She will be working with a national organization in the charitable sector. The job will also allow her family to remain in Grande Prairie, a place she calls home.

“This decision was not easy, and my heart was very torn as I love this organization and love my role,” said Vavrek, in the letter. “I know this is the right time and in the best interest for all as the Foundation is in a wonderful place and in good hands. I will be close to the Community Foundation in my new role with a national organization in the charitable sector. Thank you for 19 wonderful years and amazing experiences.”

Vavrek’s last day on the job will be on March 31.
