Chamber of Commerce to conduct labour needs assessment with surrounding municipalities

Feb 19, 2020 | 2:41 PM

The Grande Prairie and District Chamber of Commerce is launching a regional labour study, also called a labour needs assessment.

The study is in partnership with the city of Grande Prairie, the county, the MD of Greenview and the province.

Larry Gibson, Board Chair for the Chamber of Commerce, says the idea came after hearing about the struggles employees and employers are having getting and retaining jobs in the area.

“Also, from our perspective, companies that are looking to move to town, they’ve been asking about labour challenges in the area as well. So, that kind of initiated it.”

He adds that they are hoping to gain a community perspective, as well as regional.

“So that the differences maybe between Grande Cache and the City of Grande Prairie and even over to Valleyview, they may differ, so we want to get those really drilled down specifically to our region so it’s more of a localized effort.”

The Chamber says they hope to be able to foster a more competitive business market for the region, and to be able to solve the issues the market may be facing.

Gibson says the assessment will take place throughout the year, and that they are looking to hire a consultant to conduct interviews with local and regional employers.
