Suicide Prevention Resource Centre names new Executive Director

Feb 23, 2020 | 7:00 AM

The board for the Suicide Prevention Resource Centre named Ainsley Miller their new Executive Director on Thursday.

Miller has lived in Yellowknife for the last three years and previously lived in Grande Prairie for 17 years. Miller says she’s excited to be back.

“I had strong connections to Grande Prairie and I really missed being here. The position came up and I had been in executive director rolls for some time.”

Millers job is to make sure that all the programs that the centre delivers and have everything in place so that people qualified to work in mental health have all the tools that they need to succeed.

Miller discussed her goals for the new role, with one being the creation of new programs that could benefit everybody.

“Something that we haven’t really focused on in the past was programs for seniors, so were looking at what we can do to raise awareness in those groups and start getting our messages and presentations into groups that focus on seniors.”

Right now, the SPRC currently has several different programs and campaigns going on. February the ‘Shine Your Light’ campaign is at full attention for the centre. It is intended to bring awareness to mental health after the holiday season.

“February is a really good time to remind for people to start paying attention to their mental well-being, and to look around them, and reach out to their colleagues and friends and ask if they are OK.” said Miller.

Miller encourages anyone who is dealing with mental health to reach out to the centre and take advantage of programs that they offer.
