Number of COVID-19 cases in Alberta up to 14

Mar 10, 2020 | 3:53 PM

Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health has confirmed seven new cases of COVID-19 in the province, bringing the total up to 14.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw says three of the cases are in the Edmonton zone, while the other four are in the Calgary zone.

In total, six of the cases of the novel coronavirus are in Edmonton and the other eight are in Calgary.

She says all seven of the new cases are in self isolation at home, and one of the previous cases reported last week is now receiving treatment in hospital. She adds that the person in hospital had an underlying, chronic health condition.

Dr. Hinshaw adds that all the cases are travel related, and that the amount of cases will likely increase in the coming weeks. She says one of the people involved was on the same MS Braemar cruise ship in the Caribbean as a case announced on Monday.

Anyone who believes they have contracted the virus is asked to contact HealthLink 811 for instructions instead of going to a medical clinic or hospital. Dr. Hinshaw says this is especially important for those returning from outside of Canada, and that people may want to cancel or postpone any travel plans.

Anyone who is feeling sick is still being asked to stay home, and those who feel they have contracted COVID-19 are asked to stay in self-isolation for at least 14 days.
