Sturgeon Lake and Fort St. John hosting Indigenous Hockey Camps

Hockey players from the Peace Region will have an opportunity to compete in Indigenous Hockey Camps.

Oil and gas industry workers and companies are working with local Treaty 8 First Nations and Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation to hold two separate, two-day camps for hockey players between the ages of 7 and 17.

Eighty players from across the region are expected to attend each camp, and registration for the camps filled up quickly. On-ice and off-ice sessions will be run by local and guest indigenous hockey instructors.

“We’re excited about the upcoming camp, it’s all about the kids. We think sports are a great connector for hope to grow and hopefully, they’re wearing a big smile and having lots of laughs together,” said Jon Armbruster one of the main leaders for the camp.

Skaters that are registered for the camp will be split up into three different groups.

Each day will feature an on-ice and dryland session as well as a talk session about sport, respecting teammates and growing as a leader on and off the ice.

The camp has also had tremendous success with getting sponsors and volunteers on board.

Twenty-two volunteers will help out at each of the two camps, while Marks Hauling has said that they’ll continue to run and support these camps for the next five years.

Forty-two sponsors in total have also signed up to help support the camps and ensure they run well.

Along with the camps, a charity hockey game will be played at both arenas.

Local hockey players, both male and female from SLCN & Treaty 8 will take part in the games.

The camps were scheduled to take place in Sturgeon Lake from March 21-22 and Fort St. John from March 28-29, however due to concerns over COVID-19 those camps have been moved to a future date to be determined.
