Cases of COVID-19 now confirmed in each health zone in Alberta

Alberta now has 74 confirmed cases of COVID-19.

Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Deena Hinshaw, announced that as of March 16, there are 18 new cases in the province.

“For the first time, we now have confirmed cases in every health zone in Alberta, with one case each being confirmed in North and South Zones.”

Dr. Hinshaw could not give details on where in the North Zone the new case is.

“The location of the case is relevant if it puts others at risk, so if there was community transmission associated with that case, then it would be relevant for the public to know, but otherwise, and in this particular case, it was travel-related with very few contacts, so the announcements we make by geography are about zones to protect patient confidentiality.”

Dr. Hinshaw herself is in self-isolation with symptoms of a cold, awaiting results from a COVID-19 test.

She says the situation is rapidly changing, and almost all of Alberta will be affected in some way.

“As I have repeatedly said, this is our new normal. We must adapt and find creative solutions. While I know it is not possible for everyone, the ability to work from home is going to become more important for those in occupations where this is possible.”
