Peace Wapiti School Division prepares for online schooling

Mar 22, 2020 | 7:00 AM

After classes were cancelled across Alberta last Sunday, local school divisions have been spending their last week working to transition their curriculum from the classroom to online and other formats for the foreseeable future.

On Friday, the provincial government unveiled its plan for K-12 students who will be learning from home.

Now that those expectations have been set, Superintendent for the Peace Wapiti Public School Division Bob Stewart says the full division is ready to move into the next phase.

“This is a time of unprecedented change. This is going to look different. Our teachers will be there for students and parents.” said Stewart.

While learning from home isn’t the most ideal scenario, it’s one of the only option schools have in a time like this. Stewart says though he’s confident that students, teachers, parents and the division will quickly adjust.

“We have a variety of remote learning options for the students. The goal is to finalize the plan on Monday and hopefully, we’ll implement that same plan either late on Monday or Tuesday. This could include video, printed course packages, email, phone calls, and social media such as YouTube.”

The schools will then be reaching out to the parents and students about the best ways to move forward with handing out the course material.

Stewart also took time to assure parents that their child’s teacher will be their to help every step of the way, even though the physical classroom and face-to-face interaction has been removed

“Creativity is a big part of being a teacher. Everyday, teachers have to adjust their lessons for their students, and I know that our teachers are up for the challenge.”

As for if classes could return before the end of the school year, Stewart said that it’s too early to tell.
