Local stores reduce hours, add extra time for seniors amid COVID-19

Local grocery stores are taking new measures in response to COVID-19.

Below is a list of store changes happening in Grande Prairie and around the Peace Region.

Save-on-Foods:

Save-on-Foods has reduced its store hours to 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Their previous store hours were 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Monday to Friday.

In addition, seniors, people with disabilities and those most vulnerable will be able to shop in a less hectic environment as between 7:00 a.m. – 8:00 a.m. every day, they will get access to the store, before the rest of the general public. The measures are recommended by health officials.

Save-On-Foods is also encouraging customers who can shop in-store to do so, and leave online shopping services available to those who are not able to get to the store, including seniors, people with disabilities and those who are ill or self-isolating.

Limiting operating hours gives staff additional time to clean and sanitize, restock the shelves and better serve their customers, and also gives the front-line grocery store workers a much-needed chance to recharge during these unprecedented times.

Safeway:

Safeway stores across the country have reduced their regular store hours to 8:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.

In addition to the new hours, the store will have a seniors-only shopping timeframe from 8:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m.

London Drugs:

As of March 23, all London Drugs stores across the country will be reducing hours and introducing special shopping times for seniors and those with disabilities.

Stores will be open daily from 8:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. specifically for seniors and those with disabilities.

Also, London Drugs has set up a dedicated email address for seniors in desperate need of any essential items or medications.

Caregivers and family members can email supportseniors@londondrugs.com to help the seniors in their lives get assistance.

London Drugs will also close their stores at 9:00 p.m. which is an hour earlier than normal.

Walmart:

Walmart locations have reduced their hours and now will operate from 8:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. daily. A seniors-only time slot will be held from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m.

The announcement comes not long after Walmart Canada announced that it is seeking to hire 10,000 more employees across the country to help keep up with the demand.

Costco:

Beginning on March 24 from 8:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s, Costco will implement special operating hours for members who are 60 and older.

These special hours will apply to all Costco locations across the country. Costco’s regular hours of operation will remain the same.

Superstore:

Superstore has decided to switch their hours to 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. in response to COVID-19.

Seniors, people with disabilities and the most vulnerable will have access to the store from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. daily.

Superstore has also announced they’ve lowered prices on home-delivered goods while also eliminating fees for delivery and pickup for those who prefer to shop from home and online.
