City lays off 330 temporary and casual staff

The City of Grande Prairie has laid off 330 casual and temporary workers.

The majority of those laid off Friday were employed at the recreation and event facilities Eastlink and Revolution Place, which closed on March 13 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. In a release, the City says without a clear timeline for when operations at the facilities will resume, there is a shortage of work for the employees.

“We are extremely proud of all of our employees and did not take the decision to reduce our workforce in response to COVID-19 lightly,” said City Manager, Horacio Galanti, in the release.

“The City of Grande Prairie is facing the same difficult decisions on how to respond to COVID-19 that all other employers are,” adds Galanti. “We made the best decision we could after weighing all available options with the information we have available today.”
