The North Zone has its first fatality from COVID-19.

Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw announced that fatality as one of five new deaths from the disease on Monday, bringing the province’s total number of fatalities to eight.

Responding to EverythingGP’s request for further details on the case, Alberta Health says they will not be giving out any more specific details than what is provided in the daily updates.

“Due to patient confidentiality, we are not releasing specific locations of deaths unless they are in a continuing care facility,” reads the statement. “We wish to respect the privacy of those who mourn the loss of their loved ones during this difficult time.”

However, multiple sources have confirmed the deceased to be a resident of Big Lakes County.

The province added just 29 new confirmed cases of COVID-19, Monday with no increase in the North Zone. Though Dr. Hinshaw said that lower number comes from the new testing protocols, which see fewer people get tested each day.

There are now 690 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Alberta and 45 in the North Zone.
