Five additional COVID-19 related deaths announced in Alberta

Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw announced five additional deaths from COVID-19 in Alberta on Friday, including a woman in her 20’s in the Edmonton Zone.

Dr. Hinshaw also said it is unclear whether the woman had an underlying health condition, which she says serves as a “tragic reminder” that COVID-19 can be harmful to those both older and younger.

“Not only the elderly, or those with underlying conditions who are at risk. The measures we have in place are to protect all of us.”

Alberta’s top doctor said Friday the other four fatalities come from the McKenzie Towne continuing care centre in Calgary, where eight individuals have now died from complications related to COVID-19.

As of April 3, 18 Albertans have died from the disease.

The province also announced 107 newly confirmed cases across Alberta on Friday, bringing the province’s total number of cases over 1,000 to 1,075. Two new cases were added in the North Zone, bringing the zone’s total to 57.
