Government of Alberta gives $3 million to Caregivers Alberta

Apr 14, 2020 | 5:10 PM

During Tuesday’s COVID-19 briefing, Health Minister Tyler Shandro announced that the Government of Alberta will be providing $3 million to Caregivers Alberta.

The province says that the funds will help expand support programs and resources for Caregivers Alberta during the COVID-19 pandemic. They add that the funding will impact close to one million Albertans who are caregivers for family and friends.

The additional money from the province will help in the following areas:

  • Developing a public awareness campaign to highlight the importance of caregivers and their work.
  • Compiling an inventory of caregiver supports across the province.
  • Expanding the hours of the Caregiver Advisor phone line.
  • Establishing a referral system to link caregivers and Caregivers Alberta through health-care providers.
  • Updating and expanding support programs.
  • Providing employers with resources to support caregivers in the workplace.
  • Developing a coaching program for caregivers.

“Caregivers are essential to the well-being and quality of life of over one million Albertans,” said Shandro. “This is particularly true as we deal with the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Psychosocial, peer and community supports are available for all caregivers. Caregivers can call the caregivers advisor line at 1-877-453-5088 or caregiversalberta.ca. Those with any health-related questions are asked to call Health Link at 811.
