City monitoring costs related to COVID-19

Apr 15, 2020 | 12:37 PM

The City of Grande Prairie is monitoring all expenses related to COVID-19.

“At this time, we don’t know if there will be any provincial or federal support for municipalities for expenses related to this,” said Mayor Bill Given. “But for our own purposes, we wanted to ensure that we had a good handle on exactly how much our response to the pandemic has cost.”

Mayor Given adds that administration will also be providing council with their regular quarterly financial statements, which he expects will not have a high amount of COVID-19 related costs due to the pandemic having just begun, but will grow over time.

“Obviously, council wants to make sure we’re fully on top of the expense to municipal taxpayers, as the municipal property tax base really doesn’t have the capacity to deal with this sort of unprecedented situation.”
