Flooding in downtown leads to local State of Emergency declaration in Peace River

Apr 19, 2020 | 7:03 AM

UPDATE (9:00am) – Water pumping efforts continue at Riverfront Park.

Tiger dams, earth berms and road blocks are set up and will remain in place until at least Monday morning, to channel the water from the downtown towards the park.

Town officials say they did not have to breach a dike in the park, and add residents in the downtown area can return to their homes. However, the general public is asked to stay away from the downtown for the time being.

The town of Peace River has declared a local state of emergency.

At around 8:30 Saturday night, the Pat’s Creek Culvert started to overflow near the Centennial parking lot, due to what town officials believe is an ice jam in the culvert.

That overflow has led to flooding in the downtown area of Peace River near the intersection of 100th avenue and 100th street.

Contractors are being brought in to set up tiger dams and earth berms, in order to channel the water through the streets towards Riverfront Park.

According to the town’s website, Public Works is preparing to breach a dike near the washrooms in the park, to assist with pumping water into the river.

They add flood water levels have dropped somewhat in the downtown since Saturday night.
