City of Grande Prairie lays off another 60 employees
The City of Grande Prairie has laid off an additional 60 employees amid the COVID-19 pandemic, while saying that another 45 staff members will be redeployed to assist with other operations.
The news of the layoffs comes nearly a month after the City decided to layoff 330 employees at the end of March at City-run operations such as the Eastlink Centre and Revolution Place due to the shuttering of those facilities.
“The City is extremely proud of the entire organization’s ability to deliver services to our residents in innovative ways in response to COVID-19,” reads an emailed statement from a City of Grande Prairie spokesperson. “While we all wish things could return to normal today, the reality is that we cannot continue to maintain current staffing levels while the prospect of prolonged facility closures remains. Unfortunately, that is why we must proceed with further layoffs today.”
The redeployed employees, from the City’s recreation facilities, will transition to support spring and summer parks positions that they would normally be hiring for at this time of year, according to the City.
