Resident of High Prairie care home dies from COVID-19

A resident of the J.B Wood continuing care facility in High Prairie has died from COVID-19, according to the province’s Chief Medical Officer of Health.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw made the announcement during Tuesday’s COVID-19 update. The fatality is the tenth to occur in the North Zone and the eighth to occur in a Peace Region long term care centre. Seven residents of the Manoir du Lac continuing care home in McLennan have also died due to COVID-19.

This death is also the second to be attributed to the Big Lakes County area. The other was 34-year-old Shawn Auger of Grouard, who passed away on March 30.

Tuesday’s fatality was one of two newly reported deaths for April 21 in Alberta. 61 Albertans have now died from complications related to COVID-19.

The province’s aggregate data reporting service is also now listing all acute care and continuing care facilities across Alberta where outbreaks of COVID-19 have been declared. Outbreaks are declared when there are two or more cases in a single facility, indicating that transmission within the facility has occurred.

J.B. Wood and Manoir du Lac are the two outbreak sites listed in the North Zone. 29 outbreaks have been declared province wide, while 39 residents of continuing care facilities have died from COVID-19.

187 new cases of COVID-19 were announced across Alberta on Tuesday, bringing the total to 3,095 confirmed cases as of April 21. 1,273 of those cases have recovered.

Five new cases were reported in Northern Alberta, bringing the zone total to 148. A list of case numbers by Peace Region municipality can be found below:

• City of Grande Prairie: Two cases (Both recovered)
• County of Grande Prairie: Five cases (Four active, one recovered)
• M.D. of Greenview: Two cases (One active, one recovered)
• M.D. of Smoky River: 49 cases (20 active, 22 recovered, seven deaths)
• Big Lakes County: 22 cases (Seven active, 13 recovered, two deaths)
• M.D. of Lesser Slave River: Five cases (One active, four recovered)
• Northern Sunrise County: Three cases (All recovered)
• M.D. of Peace: Seven cases (One active, six recovered)
• Clear Hills County: One case (Active)
• County of Northern Lights: One case (Recovered)
• Mackenzie County: Ten cases (Nine active, one recovered)

3,472 COVID-19 tests have been completed over the last 24 hours at the provincial labs. 363 tests have been completed for North Zone residents over that time, bringing the total number of tests completed to 8,580.
