Legion revamping kitchen rather than moving

Apr 22, 2020 | 5:30 AM

A renovation project is underway at the Grande Prairie branch of the Royal Canadian Legion and officials are asking for donations.

Legion First Vice President Frank Scolly says the kitchen is being revamped.

“We have a lot of old equipment in there and we’re looking at changing it up to gas equipment, which would be a lot more economical and efficient to run than the electrics we have in there. And, bringing things up to today’s code. The place was done to the code of the day and now we’re bringing it up to today’s code, putting new flooring, probably putting in new stainless-steel shelving, taking the wood out.”

Scolly says they also want to put in new coolers, a new dishwasher, counters, and stainless-steel sinks.

The Legion says in a Facebook post it is looking for donated or reasonably priced used kitchen equipment like a broiler, a stove, cabinets, shelves, and counters.

Scolly adds they are also looking for some stainless steel.

“If anybody has got some sheets of stainless steel that we might be able to have because there are some walls we have to cover in stainless steel. We are looking for fibreglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) board. It’s a very durable board that you can put on the walls and it’s easily cleaned.”

Scolly says they are also looking for two-by-fours, fire-rated drywall, and paint.

He thinks the changes should make the kitchen easier to clean and maintain.

Scolly adds the Legion decided to do this rather than something bigger because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The idea of being able to raise funds to do a bigger renovation or a bigger addition or a new building we think is going to be rather difficult for the next few years. (Also), being able to sell our present location, we’re not sure how well that’s going to go over.”

Scolly says the work is underway, but only two to four people are in the building at a time and social distancing measures and other safety measures are in place.

Money for the project is coming from previous fund-raising and grants for what was hoped to be a major renovation or new building.

He is hoping the project will be finished by the time the Legion is allowed to reopen.

Scolly also wanted to send the Legion’s thoughts to the RCMP and the people in Nova Scotia after the weekend shootings.
