2020 Calgary Stampede cancelled amid COVID-19 concerns

Apr 23, 2020 | 3:20 PM

This year’s Calgary Stampede has been cancelled.

The Stampede says on its website that it is unable to host this year’s event because the province has banned all gatherings of over 15 people and that the City of Calgary has declared a local state of emergency.

“This is an extremely difficult announcement to share, but it is the right thing to do. As a community celebration, the cancellation of our annual event comes with our community and public health and safety front of mind,” says Calgary Stampede President & Chairman of Board Dana Peers in a news release.

The Stampede has been around for 108 years and will not happen for the first time ever in its history.

Five wagon drivers from the Peace Region were due to compete in this year’s Rangeland Derby.

The canvas auction that was to take place in March had also been put off because of the pandemic.

The World Professional Chuckwagon Association says in a statement posted to its website that it supports the decision and supports AHS and government efforts to protect public health.

The WPCA adds what happens with its other events will be decided in consultation with the various host committees.

The first four events of 2020 had already been postponed or cancelled.
