Photo enforcement operations reduced in Grande Prairie during first quarter of 2020

Apr 29, 2020 | 12:34 PM

The City of Grande Prairie’s Enforcement Services has reduced photo radar operations in the first quarter of 2020.

At the City Committee meetings on Tuesday, Enforcement Services presented their update, showing that they had reduced photo enforcement operators from seven to four part time positions working 20 hours a week each.

Mayor Bill Given says the changes were in response to less people out and driving due to many closures caused by COVID-19.

“Particularly with the closure of schools, since there was no need to continue conducting enforcement in school zones, which is where a majority of enforcement was previously, there wasn’t a need to have as many resources there.”

“So, I think it was a smart response from administration that is really reflective of the areas that need enforcement today. The program is still apart of our overall safety approach to highlight safety within city limits, and Council will be having a Council Committee of the Whole in the upcoming month or so here, to discuss the photo enforcement program”

The photo enforcement operators’ changes reflected in 48 hours per week of work instead of the previous 156 hours per week, while six intersection safety devices continue to operate.
