Alberta Health Services offering resources and support during Mental Health Week

May 6, 2020 | 1:58 PM

This week is Mental Health Week across Canada. It is aimed at promoting positive mental health and wellbeing.

Jody Walker, Mental Health Promotion Facilitator with Alberta Health Services, says addiction and mental health offices remain open, and that they do have more information online as well.

“If you look at Alberta Health Services and go to Health in Tough Times, there a variety of things to help with stress, to help people recognize the signs and symptoms that they’re experiencing with regards to mental health, and then connect to services that are available to them.”

She adds that the mental health helpline is also always open to those who may need it at 1-877-303-2642, or 1-866-332-2322 for addiction help and support.

Walker says many might be dealing with mental health issues due to the current COVID-19 pandemic.

“They could be experiencing the loss of a loved one, a home or a job, they can be in family crisis, and I think one the biggest things for them to know is they’re not alone, and to be able to apply some practical strategies that can help them be able to ease some of the stress and anxiety, possibly some of the grief that they may be experiencing.”

She says they are recommending using the five steps to well-being, which include connecting with others, being active, being grateful, learning and giving, adding that it is important to remember to follow physical distancing guidelines while practicing these steps.
