Northern Lights Baseball Academy cancels 2020 season

May 6, 2020 | 10:52 AM

The Northern Lights u18 AAA Baseball Academy announced Tuesday that they have cancelled their 2020 season due to COVID-19.

In a statement posted on the Northern Lights Facebook page, the baseball academy said because of COVID-19 health concerns and restrictions, the board of directors had to pull the plug on the summer baseball season.

“The health and safety of our players, staff and families will always be first and foremost to us. We are fortunate to have players joining us again this season from across the Peace County, and with that the health and safety concerns of those communities weighs very heavy on our minds. We know that we could potentially be putting our players and many communities at risk, as playing in the areas of AB that are currently hot spot and/or they traveling to us. We feel this is our responsibility to assist in limiting the spread of COVID-19.”

The Lights were looking to build off a strong 2019 season, which saw them succeed in several major tournaments. These accolades included:

  • 2019 Gold medal at the Alberta AAA Tier 2 Provincial Championship.
  • 2019 Silver medal at the Alberta AAA Tier 1 Provincial Championship.
  • 2019 Silver medal at the Western Canadian Baseball Association Championship.

They finished the year as the most decorated club in Northwestern Alberta’s AAA league.

While the ball club will not be playing any games this season, they’re hopeful that COVID-19 restrictions could eventually be lifted by the fall and winter, so they can offer their fall and winter baseball training and conditioning programs later in the year.
