Grande Prairie Regional College has inked a new partnership with Athabasca University that will the help the college improve its online learning platform and increase access to courses for students across the region.

The agreement will see GPRC merge its 700 online courses onto a new online platform over the summer, plus create an additional 26 course for online delivery for September 2020 with the guidance of AU.

“It is innovative partnerships such as this new agreement between GPRC and Athabasca University that will allow GPRC to achieve its goal of being more inclusive, modern and accessible for students across northern Alberta and beyond,” said Dr. Robert Murray, President and CEO of GPRC.

AU, known as “Canada’s Online University”, will aid in the design and develop of its online courses and help train and support educators and administrators in online education. The college adds in a release that this move will help provide students with a “modern, intuitive and interactive online learning platform.”

“AU is pleased to be able to offer its expertise to help GPRC increase access to learning opportunities for students in northern Alberta with a model that can be scaled up in the future,” said Dr. Neil Fassina, President of Athabasca University. “We are proud to partner with other post-secondary institutions in providing teaching, technology and training supports.”

Dr. Murray adds that this partnership will address a need identified to him by students since he joined the college back in December.

“What we have heard from learners, and we hear from students, is that online learning and some of the flexibility around those online opportunities is important to us to be fostering the best educational experience possible.”
