Province to provide $147 million for northern Alberta flood relief

EDMONTON – The Alberta government says it will provide $147 million in disaster relief for communities affected by flooding during spring ice breakup.

Several northern Alberta communities, including Fort McMurray and Fort Vermilion, had to be evacuated last month after nearby rivers spilled their banks due to huge ice jams.

About 13,500 people were forced from their homes.

Many people have returned, but officials say at least 3,000 residents cannot move back because of water damage and a lack of power.

The mayor of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, which includes Fort McMurray, raised concerns earlier this week that most people either don’t have insurance or not enough to deal with the damage.

Don Scott estimated there’s been at least $100 million in damage and had asked the province to contribute through a disaster relief program.
