Food trucks out and operating in Grande Prairie

Food trucks in Grande Prairie are beginning to set up around the city despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Vera Beck, with Christy’s Dogs, Burgers and Fries, says they began the food truck this year, and that despite the pandemic, they have been busy every day.

“We think by the time we opened, Grande Prairie and probably Canada were just starting to get a little bit of that cabin fever, so I think seeing a nice, bright red food truck on the Canadian Tire parking lot after all the pandemic, social distancing, and self-isolation, I think it ended up being a positive thing.”

She says that if they have customers physically distancing when they are open, they can run their truck.

Christy’s is not the only truck in Grande Prairie out and operating. CJ Weslowsky, Owner of Fast Franks Food Truck, which has been around since 2014, says they were nervous to begin the season during the pandemic.

“What kind of worked out in our favour was all of the restaurant stuff being closed and everything else being closed, people are ‘dying’ and itching to get out, looking for any excuse just to leave the house, so food trucks are kind of bringing a little bit of that normality back to them.”

Weslowsky says for the summer, many of their catering and summer events have been cancelled, and they’re planning to capitalize as much as they can working on the streets, and will continue to work with local charities and feed those in need.

He says they usually budget around $10-15,000 for charity work each season. Beck says Christy’s is also hoping to begin working with local charities and non-profits.

“We’re going to make sure that we find time and donations. We want to support the community by helping with the homeless, so finding out a small program within our little business to help feed the homeless, we also want to work with women’s shelters to see what we can do there.”

Christy’s is currently renting a spot in the Canadian Tire parking lot from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day. Fast Frank’s will have their current location and hours on their Facebook page.
