City looking to add new capital projects to 2020 budget

The City is moving forward with changes to the 2020 Capital Budget.

At a Council Committee of the Whole meeting on Thursday, the Committee voted to have council approve the changes, which include new capital projects totaling 13.475 million dollars.

Included in these are renovations and enhancements to Revolution Place, which were split into the Revolution Place 25 Year Anniversary Enhancements, totaling $125,000, and the City’s Revolution Place Vision which would cost $419,000.

The main, short term focuses for the facility include concession renovations, and lobby and box office upgrades. Upgraded and premium seating were also identified, as well as adding amenities for artists to attract more concerts held in the Bowes Events Centre.

Mayor Bill Given says a second motion was also passed, asking administration to come back with a more comprehensive vision of these changes to Revolution Place.

“I think the intent there is an acknowledgement that the facility is getting close to the 25-year mark, and this is a time where in any major facility, you hit a point where you have to make some decisions whether you’re going to make small re-investments and limp it along, (or) whether you’re going to do more substantial investments.”

Much of the funding found for these changes and projects comes from the Municipal Sustainability Initiative (MSI) and Federal Gas Tax (FGT) funding that the City would have to return to the provincial and federal governments if it is not allocated.

“Some of the major pieces will be more significant road work, that I know Grande Prairie residents will appreciate,” said Mayor Given. “And there was also some reallocation, shuffling of funds, to ensure that we’re maximizing the grant dollars that had been coming from the provincial and federal governments.”

Included in the projects are improvements to the Smith subdivision and snow dump liner, spillway repairs and the Crystal Ridge road.
