Road and Trail Rehab

City’s 2020 Road Rehabilitation Program starts in College Park area Friday

May 14, 2020 | 5:45 PM

The City of Grande Prairie’s annual road rehabilitation program is set to get underway Friday, May 15 for the 2020 construction season.

Starting Friday morning, work will continue in the College Park area from 2019’s road rehab program. That means 106 Street between 100 Avenue and 104 Avenue, and 104 Avenue between 106 Street and 105 Street will see road work including asphalt overlay and storm sewer infrastructure repairs. The City says crews will be operating from Monday to Sunday with work expected to be wrapped up by mid-June.

During this time, bus stop 406/606 will be re-routed to stop 408/608.

Meanwhile, on May 25, asphalt overlay and Full Depth Reclamation (FDR) work will begin on 116 Avenue between the CN tracks and 92 Street.

FDR work will also begin that day on Westpointe Drive between 81 and 74 Avenue, as well as Patterson Drive between Prairie Road and 84 Avenue.

“FDR consists of pulverizing the existing road pavement and mixing it into the granular base structure. Cement and foamed asphalt are mixed into the structure and compacted, and a new asphalt pavement structure is placed overtop,” reads a description of work by the City. “Asphalt overlay is a method used to prolong the current roadway showing cracks and potholes, while still not being damaged enough to warrant a full road rehabilitation.”

Construction at these sites is expected to be completed by the end of June.

The City also announced Thursday that the Trail Rehabilitation program will begin on Wednesday, May 20. On that day, asphalt replacement will start on the trail along 100 Avenue between 106 and 108 Street. The trail on the north side of Crystal Lake will then see the same work take place beginning in June.

“The specified trails will be closed to the public until all work is completed,” says the City. “All construction zones will be properly signed and barricaded.”

As part of its capital plan, the City of Grande Prairie is spending $16.9 million in major road improvements for 2020, while $400,000 is reserved for trail upgrades.
