Community Foundation of Northwestern Alberta providing $545,000 to local charities

May 21, 2020 | 12:21 PM

The Community Foundation of Northwestern Alberta will be providing $545,000 to help support local charities in the community that are responding to COVID-19.

The $545,000 comes from the Government of Canada’s $350 million Emergency Community Support Fund (ECSF), which will provide money to charities that help vulnerable Canadians across this country.

The Community Foundation of Northwestern Alberta along with the United Way Alberta Northwest and the Red Cross will work together to reach as many communities in the region as they can.

“We’ll be deliberating on the applications we receive weekly and looking to fund them very soon after that,” said Laura LaValley the CEO of the Community Foundation of Northwestern Alberta. “These groups are going to be needing funding promptly, so we’re doing our best to work quickly and get the money in their hands as fast as we can.”

Applications for the money began on May 19. Applicants must be able to register tax receipts and must qualify as donees.

Qualified donees include:

  • Registered Charities.
  • Registered Canadian amateur athletic associations.
  • Registered Canadian municipalities (sorted by province/territory).
  • First Nations and other registered municipal or public bodies performing a function of government in Canada.

“The biggest parameter that has been set for us by the federal government is that these moneys are going out to groups that are supporting the vulnerable populations in the midst of COVID,” said LaValley. “The application needs to meet those requirements.”

In a statement from MP for Grande Prairie-Mackenzie Chris Warkentin he says he has full trust in the Community Foundation ensuring that nobody falls through the cracks during these tough times.

“I am proud of the generosity and compassion of our community. Peace Country residents have always stepped up and assisted vulnerable people in difficult times and that has been evident during past several weeks. I am confident that our local Community Foundation will ensure these funds are invested where they can make the greatest difference in our communities.”
