Mosquitos & COVID-19

No evidence mosquitos spread COVID-19: Hinshaw

Alberta’s top doctor says there’s one thing you don’t have to worry about while taking part in outdoor activities during the ongoing pandemic.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw explained on Monday that there’s no evidence to show that COVID-19 can be spread by mosquitoes.

“That is something Albertans should not be worried about,” she said. “Albertans should, however, be thinking as the summer approaches of illnesses like West Nile Virus.”

Hinshaw says it’s still important to keep in mind all the typical precautions when it comes to mosquitoes.

“Wearing mosquito repellant when outdoors, wearing long pant and long shirts if they’re going to be in areas where there are lots of mosquitoes. Those are the kinds of things that would protect Albertans from any kind of mosquito-borne illness. And again, the most common one, other than the irritation of the mosquito bite reaction, but the most common significant illness here is West Nile Virus.”

Hinshaw’s advice comes as municipalities across the province are beginning to reopen outdoor amenities such as playgrounds and off-leash dog parks.

Earlier this month, golf courses in Alberta were permitted to open and the number of people allowed at outdoor gatherings in the province was increased from 15 to 50.
